Case Study 05 — Nutridog
From idea to evidence.De la idea a la evidencia.
Nutridog started with my own dog, who wouldn't reliably eat commercial food. I began preparing his meals myself — different proteins, organs, vegetables — which raised a much bigger question:
How do I know whether the diet I'm preparing actually provides everything my dog needs?
Talking to other dog owners, I found I wasn't alone.
Canine nutrition is very different from human nutrition, and deficiencies can have real long-term consequences. The problem was never a lack of information — I spent a lot of time researching through veterinary books, online sources and AI-assisted calculations.
The problem was the effort and uncertainty involved in turning that information into a safe, balanced diet that could be maintained over time.
My first idea was relatively simple: build a nutrient calculator for homemade dog food. Enter the dog's characteristics and a recipe's ingredients, get a nutritional profile back.
But conversations with other dog owners changed how I understood the problem. They didn't want to become nutrition experts. They wanted to know:
"Am I feeding my dog correctly?" — and if not, "what should I change?"
"¿Estoy alimentando bien a mi perro?" — y si no, "¿qué debería cambiar?"
The product evolved from a nutrient calculator to deficiency identification plus recommendations: analyse the recipe, identify imbalances, explain what's happening in simple language, recommend a change.
Users don't need to become canine nutrition experts. They need confidence that they're doing the right thing.
That raised a second problem — trust. If the app tells someone their dog's diet is deficient, why should they believe it?
Recommendations always need a clear explanation attached.
Owners also weren't looking for three or four recipes to repeat forever. They wanted to know whether the overall pattern of what they fed their dog was balanced over time — which pushed the product from a recipe calculator towards a diet-management tool.
One of the clearest decisions was resisting everything the product could eventually do. The minimum valuable experience became:
Create a nutritionally balanced weekly menu.
The MVP deliberately excludes explanations depth, saved recipes, recipe libraries, advanced personalisation and other convenience features — for now.
Registration is deliberately not required to reach first value — because what I'm after is helping dog owners by removing unnecessary steps.
The current model separates the two layers of value:
And it's the Premium user who's going to want to register.
What exists today is product definition, conversations with dog owners, a rapidly built prototype, an MVP definition, a proposed funnel, a Free/Premium model and a list of experiments to run next. But the prototype is currently a Wizard of Oz — AI sits behind the experience rather than a fully implemented nutritional engine.
To reduce uncertainty before moving forward, here's what I'm asking myself:
Do owners experience this problem strongly enough to change behaviour?
Can an owner understand the result without becoming a nutrition expert?
Is there a reason to come back?
Will people value managing the whole diet, not just one recipe?
When Nutridog moves beyond the Wizard of Oz prototype, analytics gets designed in from day one — landing, dog profile, recipe, analysis, recommendation, recalculation, weekly plan, Premium — so the funnel can show where people drop off and what predicts a return, rather than being added retrospectively.
Framed as open questions rather than commitments:
Planteado como preguntas abiertas, no como compromisos:
| Question | Hypothesis | Experiment |
|---|---|---|
| Do owners understand the nutritional analysis? | They can identify what's wrong without help. | Usability test |
| Do recommendations create action? | Users change an ingredient after seeing a deficiency. | Prototype test |
| Is there a reason to return? | Owners want to monitor diet over time. | Retention experiment |
| Is weekly planning valuable? | Owners prefer balancing several recipes together. | Prototype / fake-door test |
| Will people pay? | Managing the whole diet is worth paying for. | Premium intent test |
| Pregunta | Hipótesis | Experimento |
|---|---|---|
I don't need more features yet. I need more evidence.
Todavía no necesito más funcionalidades. Necesito más evidencia.
Product Management skills demonstratedHabilidades de Product Management demostradas
Starting from a real personal problem and validating that it's shared by other dog owners.
Using conversations with owners to challenge the original assumption.
Moving from "calculate nutrients" to "help me know if my dog's diet is balanced."
Reducing the first version to the smallest experience capable of creating real value.
Deliberately removing registration from the path to the first useful result.
A clear line between individual recipe analysis and long-term diet management.
Naming assumptions before investing in more functionality.
Defining experiments for problem, first value, retention and Premium intent.
Designing the event taxonomy and funnel before building the production product.
Treating the product as an evolving set of questions, not a fixed roadmap.
The central reflectionLa reflexión central
Nutridog isn't interesting because I've built a dog nutrition application. I haven't.
It's interesting because it shows how I approach a product when I don't know the answer yet. I can have an idea without immediately turning it into a feature. I can change the solution when the user's real problem turns out to be different from my assumption. I can define an MVP around learning and value rather than completeness. And I can deliberately stop building when what I need next is evidence.
The product is designed. The hypotheses are defined. Now I need to test them.
No lo he hecho.
Ahora necesito ponerlas a prueba.
I don't start with solutions. No empiezo por las soluciones.
I start with the right questions.Empiezo por las preguntas correctas.
