Playground — TanukilabEl laboratorio — Tanukilab
A creative laboratory, not a case studyUn laboratorio creativo, no un caso de estudio
Long before I asked myself what users needed, I wanted to understand how things were built.
Tanukilab was born, in part, from that curiosity.
Tanukilab nació, en parte, de esa curiosidad.
Tanukilab was the name one of my best friends and I chose for our little development and design laboratory.
There was no grand business plan behind it. No roadmap. No funding. No stakeholders asking for deadlines.
Just two curious people asking:
"Can we build this?"
And then trying.
We built games, mobile applications, web experiments and even some playful VR experiments. Sometimes the idea was good. Sometimes it wasn't. Sometimes we finished something. Sometimes we moved on to the next idea.
That was the point. Tanukilab was a place to learn by making.
A veces no. A veces terminábamos algo. A veces pasábamos a la siguiente idea.
Ese era el objetivo. Tanukilab era un lugar para aprender construyendo.
One particularly memorable project was a game involving customisable monsters. Players could create an almost endless variety of monsters by combining different traits and then use them in mini-games.
My nieces became some of our most enthusiastic testers.
A nice example of how the project naturally evolved through experimentation and real-world feedback — even though there was no formal user research process behind it.
Our process was intentionally informal. We would come up with an idea together, discuss what we wanted to make, divide the work and start building.
Neither of us simply "owned" a feature and disappeared into a cave. We built things together, challenged each other's decisions and reached agreements about what the final product should become.
This taught me something that still matters to me:
Good collaboration isn't about agreeing immediately. It's a dance of ideas that start apart and end up becoming one that convinces us both.
One of the hardest decisions was always the same:
When is it time to stop building and release the first version?
Ideas have a peculiar habit of growing. A small game becomes another feature. That feature suggests another one. Suddenly the original "small experiment" has become a much larger project.
Tanukilab taught me that shipping requires making a conscious decision that something is good enough to exist.
Once we chose a release date, we had to work towards it. That was one of my earliest practical lessons in scope, prioritisation and shipping.
Tanukilab taught me how to build games and applications and take them all the way to a real release.
It taught me how much harder it is to reach users without any marketing or distribution strategy behind a product.
But more importantly, it taught me how much I enjoy learning through creation. I learned to:
Aprendí a:
Learning doesn't always need a course, a certification or a structured roadmap.
Sometimes the best way to understand something is simply to try building it.A veces la mejor forma de entender algo es simplemente intentar construirlo.
